Sage Homes achieved Florida Water Starr℠ Gold Certification for their former model in Burnt Store Meadows. Florida. Water Starr℠ is a voluntary program that encourages water efficiency in household appliances, fixtures, irrigation and landscapes. Susan Douglas, Program Coordinator for the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) said that in addition to being the first Builder in Charlotte County to participate in the program, of 130 points required for Gold Certification, Sage earned 184 – well in excess of the programs standards, which is a testament to the quality of Sage Homes' work. At the 2011 South East Building Conference (SEBC), Paul Schaefer of Sage Homes was recognized for the energy efficiency of their new model via an Aurora Award from the Florida Home Builders Association.
That model was also designed to very high efficiency standards, surpassing the requirements of the US Dept. of Energy's Builders Challenge (70) and Energy Star (77) with their HERS rating of 55 (lower is better). They also earned FPL's BuildSmart designation for energy efficient practices, and was also Certified Platinum by the Florida Green Building Coalition.
"The features included in this home will enable the average family to save nearly $800 a year on their electric bills", said Paul Schaefer, President of Sage Homes, "and that's without resorting to the addition of solar. One of the key premises of green building / energy efficient design is to reduce the need for energy first—to pick the 'low hanging fruit' if you will—before considering producing power. In other words, if you reduce the demands of your home for power, you will then need to generate less of it—a smaller and less expensive solar installation will do the job."
